The vibrant study captures the raw, kinetic energy behind one of the most famous compositions in modern art history. Commissioned by the Russian collector Sergei Shchukin, the final mural-sized version of The Dance was intended to decorate the grand staircase of his Moscow mansion. In this preliminary work, Matisse focuses on the essential "Fauve" (Wild Beast) principles of bold, non-naturalistic colour and expressive line to convey a sense of primitive, ecstatic movement. The composition features a tight knot of figures rendered in a searing, vermilion red. Matisse’s use of color here is not descriptive but emotional—the heat of the red bodies vibrates against the brilliant yellow ground and the deep blue of the sky. By stripping away traditional details like facial features or complex shading, Matisse elevates the subject from a specific scene to a universal symbol of human rhythm and community. The circular arrangement of the dancers, with their limbs straining to maintain the link, creates a visual loop of perpetual motion. This study serves as a fascinating look into Matisse’s process, showing the bold brushwork and structural planning required to balance such intense energy within a confined space. It remains a testament to his belief that art should be a "soothing, calming influence on the mind."
