Zodiac (from the La Plume magazine) is arguably Mucha's most celebrated calendar design. The composition is a harmonious balance of complex iconography and organic curves. By surrounding the regal central figure with the twelve zodiac signs, Mucha creates a sense of cosmic elegance, framed by lush, earthy foliage and delicate Art Nouveau linework. Zodiac was originally designed as an in-house calendar for the printer Champenois, it became so popular that the editor of the artistic review La Plume immediately bought the rights to distribute it, leading to at least nine known variants of the design.
