Kunisada masterfully captures the explosive energy of a kabuki mie pose. The actor's powerful stance, emphasised by the dramatic flare of his striped robes and the diagonal line of the unsheathed katana, creates a sense of imminent action. Kunisada was the star pupil of the most influential woodblock print school in Japan: The Utagawa School studying at age 14, becoming so successful that his popularity in Edo (Tokyo) surpassed even that of his contemporaries Hokusai and Hiroshige.
