William Morris’s Strawberry Thief pattern exemplifies Arts and Crafts ideals through rhythmic pattern, naturalistic detail, and rich indigo discharge printing. The lively birds and foliage balance ornament with structure, celebrating craftsmanship, medieval inspiration, and harmony between design, nature, and material. Morris had attempted this complex printing method since 1875, but only succeeded after moving production to Merton Abbey in 1881.
