Thayer creates a hauntingly beautiful monument to Robert Louis Stevenson, merging classical allegory with personal grief. The winged figure's sombre posture and the rough, swept texture of the rock (applied with a stable broom) evoke a sense of weathered permanence. It is a masterful study of an Angels light serving as a "light against oblivion". Thayer and Robert Louis Stevenson never actually met, but Thayer was deeply captivated by Stevenson's writing.
