This is the pinnacle of the Golden Phase. Adele is transformed into a Byzantine icon, her figure dissolved into a sea of gold spirals, triangles, and "eyes". It is a breathtaking synthesis of portraiture and pure decoration, immortalising the subject through the most opulent materials imaginable. It was the subject of a major international legal battle for restitution, later dramatized in the movie Woman in Gold.
