Koson brilliantly utilises a vertical composition to emphasise the monkey's precarious yet poised position. The delicate rendering of the fur contrasts beautifully with the fluid, minimalist lines of the branch and water, capturing a fleeting. Ohara Koson was a leader of the shin-hanga (new prints) movement, but he actually changed his name to Shōson in 1926 after he began working with the influential publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō.
