Hokusai masterfully captures the frantic energy of a river crossing at Kanaya. Stylised indigo waves surge against porters carrying travellers, creating a rhythmic pulse of human labour. In the distance, the snow-capped Mount Fuji remains serene, eternal observer to the bustling movement along the Tokaido road. Hokusai’s training was a journey through several competing schools of Japanese art, which he eventually synthesised into his own unique style.
