This detail captures the haughty power of the goddess of health. The vertical flow of her crimson and gold robes mirrors the unyielding nature of life and death. Her indifferent gaze and the golden snake drinking from the bowl emphasise medicine as a mysterious, almost ritualistic force of nature. The original full-sized canvas was destroyed by a fire set by retreating SS soldiers at the end of WWII.
