This work is a profound meditation on the cycle of life. The lush, decorative cloak protecting the pregnant woman is punctuated by a skull—a memento mori. Klimt beautifully juxtaposes the vibrant promise of birth with the silent, inevitable presence of death, all encased in a rich Byzantine aesthetic. Unlike the earlier Hope I, where the woman was nude, Klimt clothed the figure here to focus on symbolic ornamentation.
