Matsumoto Hoji's Grumpy Toad II. Hoji’s toads have become a modern viral icon because they anticipate minimalist design by nearly two centuries. By stripping away all environment – no water, no lily pad – Hoji forces the viewer to confront the toad’s comical personality directly. The bold, wet ink strokes create a sense of weight and "toad-ness" that feels incredibly modern and expressive.
