Alphonse Mucha's En l'honneur de Sarah Bernhardt (1896) is an iconic example of the Art Nouveau movement. Mucha used a subdued palette, ornate natural forms, and sinuous lines to elevate the actress to an ethereal, almost deified status, blurring the lines between commercial art and fine art.

Created for a grand banquet held at the Grand Hôtel in Paris on December 9, 1896, this artwork depicts the legendary actress Sarah Bernhardt as the Princess of the Orient from the play La Princesse Lointaine, wearing her signature crown of fresh Madonna lilies.
