The Maiden is a dream-like vortex of colour and form. The interlocking bodies of women represent the many facets of the central figure's subconscious. The shift to a cool palette of blues and purples creates a rhythmic, musical quality that captures the fluid transition from girlhood to maturity. The painting represents the "dream state" and the development of sensuality through the lens of early psychoanalysis popular in Vienna.
