Thayer masterfully employs chiaroscuro to pull these figures from a void of shadow. The ethereal, sketch-like handling of the hair contrasts with the luminous, porcelain skin tones. There is a profound, sombre intimacy here; the protective grasp and steady gazes capture a timeless, soulful bond between siblings. The painting depicts Thayer’s own children, Mary and Gerald.
