Abbott Handerson Thayer's Angel is a significant American Realist painting from 1887. It functions as both a portrait of his daughter Mary and an allegory of spirituality, using soft brushwork and thick paint to lift the figure into an exalted atmosphere. Modelled by Thayer’s eldest daughter, Mary, who was 11 years old at the time. To create the composition, Thayer famously had Mary stand in front of a board to which he had nailed a pair of real feathered wings.
